Health

We are starting a health unit about Human Development and Sexual Health on June 16th
Parents/guardians play the most significant role in the formation of children’s values and behaviours related to human growth and development. It is important for schools and parents to work together to ensure that home and school provide a mutually supportive framework for learning.

We will share and communicate our class learning with you so that you are able to consider the topics in view of your own
family and your own beliefs. This unit will cover the following areas:

  • describe how they can build confidence and lay a foundation for healthy relationships by acquiring a clearer understanding of the physical, social, and emotional changes that occur during adolescence

  • make informed decisions that demonstrate respect for themselves and other and help to build healthier relationships, using a variety of living skills

  • assess the effects of stereotypes, including homophobia and assumptions regarding gender roles and expectations, sexual orientation, gender expression, race, ethnicity or culture, mental health, and abilities, on an individual’s self-concept, social inclusion, and relationships with others, and propose appropriate ways of responding to and changing assumptions and stereotypes
Should you have any concerns or if you would like further information about this unit, I can be reached at kahiggins@scdsb.on.ca.
