September 2015 - Number Sense & Numeration
Dear Parent/Guardian:
Over the next few weeks, you child will be extending his/her knowledge of place value to include large numbers to one million and decimal numbers to thousandths. The focus of these lessons will be on understanding the meaning of numbers. Your child will be reading, writing, comparing, ordering, and rounding numbers. In the classroom, we will use tools such as place value charts and number lines to represent and compare numbers. At home, you can engage your child in conversations about numbers in the real world.
Here are some sample activities:
- Find food products measured in grams and rename them in kilograms and milligrams
- Have your child create three different 6-digit numbers by rolling a die, and order the numbers from least to the greatest
- Find a large number in the newspaper and explain if it is an exact measure or an estimate
